In the current English education in elementary schools, there is too much activities such as repetitive activities, chants, games, and unnatural scene settings. CLIL is suitable for exploring methods that stimulate intellectual curiosity in response to student&#8217;s interests, while involving content and thinking activities. In this study, we will investigate effectiveness and possibilities of CLIL. In this study, I examine whether elementary school students can effectively learn the content of both English and other subjects. The participants are 105 6th graders and 8 5th graders from an elementary school attached to a national university. Blue Sky Elementary 6 was used. The subject of this study was Unit 2: Welcome to Japan. This unit was integrated with the social geography content that the students had already studied. A questionnaire survey was conducted before and after the unit. As research on single words showed that a multiple-choice test with options in the test-taker\u2019s L1 produced more accurate scores than one with English options, the options of the PVST were translated into Japanese. It was shown that although some items could be further improved, the test generally fit the Rasch model. The relationship between item difficulty, frequency, and familiarity was examined to see which of the two factors, frequency or familiarity, could better predict the difficulty of phrasal expressions, and no statistical difference was found between the two. Finally, as test scores alone do not reveal test taking behaviour, think-aloud interviews were conducted to some participants. The think-aloud data were grouped into seven main categories and 18 types of process, and it was suggested that in 38% of cases the test-takers used partial knowledge of the sentence to answer the items. It was also found that the guessing effect was below chance (10.8%) and that two of the Japanese options were confusing to the test takers suggesting that the wording of the options needs to be changed. The results suggest that English teachers need to recognise the value of FL and the importance of teaching each phrase as a whole rather than breaking it down into individual
